First egg!

v-first-egg.JPG

One of my hens laid the first egg today. The hens are five months old. It’s a smallish egg, not the extra-large I expect from these hens, so I guess the hens aren’t as mature as I thought.

I had promised the hens that when they laid the first egg, I’d clean their house and put fresh straw in their nesting boxes. And so I did. Clearly they understood what the nesting boxes are for, because that’s where I found the first egg — in the middle box of the three nesting boxes.

I was so tempted to eat it right away, but I ended up washing it and putting it in the fridge, hoping for another egg tomorrow. I gave them an extra special supper tonight…

Isn’t that a beautiful thing? Almost as wonderful as the first tomato of the garden year! Wait until you break that little beauty into the pan to cook it. chickens raised like yours have beautiful deep yellow yolks that stand up high and are just beautiful.

Congratulations-you’re on your way to many years of good eats to come.

I can’t wait to get my house built in Asheville and have the same ability to show my boys the difference between home grown and mass produced. I spoke to the architect of the cottage, what a nice guy! He sent me a CD of several of his designs but I am still in love with the same one as yours. It’s so full of charm. It will be big enough if I put a basement under it. I’ll be seeing my builder this weekend to get his input on the plans. I’m egger to see some more of your interior photos as you progress. It feels like a sneak peek into my future home.

I’m glad I checked in this evening to get the news. How exciting for you and the hen. Maybe you should bronze this one since it is the first from your brood.
The 2nd one should be the “eater”. Congrats.
