Rainy day breakfast

S-hot cakes and blackberry

All during the night, a steady rain blew in from an Atlantic storm. The high temperature forecast for today is 62. This is sprouted wheat pancakes with maple syrup and blackberry preserves. I wish I could say that I made the preserves, but a friend gave them to me.

Third day of cool, wet, fall-like weather in Winston, too. I made the first pot of beef stew of the season today (sorry vegetarians). Used my favorite “fait tout,” French for a large cast iron Dutch oven clad in enamel. The stew is simmering low and slow in the oven right now — filling the entire house with its warm and comforting aroma. Happy Fall, everyone!

For grammar mavens on this blog: Notice the funny comma error in my previous comment? It says “sorry vegetarians,” a disparagement, whereas I meant “sorry, vegetarians,” an apology. Ha-ha.

Here’s a French cooking tip for rectifying stew or soup that has come out a tad too greasy: Take it off the heat and let it become still, until the grease settles on the surface. Take pieces of regular white or wheat bread that you don’t mind throwing away and gently lay then lift the bread, one side and then the other, on the surface to absorb the settled oil. Have your garbage can right next to the stove so that you can do three or four pieces in a row. Works like a charm!
