Though usually they&#8217;re soaring overhead rather than perched in the trees facing the abbey. I&#8217;ll let the chickens out later this morning, when I&#8217;m sure the coast is clear.<\/p>\n<p>Update: A friend on Facebook identifies this as a sharp shinned\/Cooper&#8217;s hawk and says that they don&#8217;t normally go after chickens. Judging from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cooper's_Hawk\">a Wikipedia photo<\/a>, I believe this is a young hawk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/acornabbey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/big-bird-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/acornabbey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/big-bird-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"big-bird-1\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5045\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Raptors are common here.
