The local sweet potatoes

r-sweet-potatoes-02-12-1.JPG

I can’t rave enough about the local sweet potatoes. They’re cheap, they’re good, and they’re fine winter fare, “Rare ballast for an empty belly,” as Sam Gamgee said. They’re so flavorful that I don’t even bother to season them, not even salt. They’re highly compatible, though, with toasted sesame oil, a compatibility the exploitation of which I must explore.

I’ve got to try growing me some this year.

If you do try to grow some sweet potatoes, don’t make the mistake I did. I mulched around the plants to keep the weeds down and make them easier to grow. The sweet potatoes grow by sending down shoots from the vines, so by mulching them, I prevented the shots from growing and had a very small yield! They’re good though, and fun to dug up at the end of summer.

They gain most of their size and sweetness at the end of their season, so don’t dig them up until just before frost.

Thanks for the advice! Are you in Stokes County or thereabouts?

Nope, Northern Indiana, just an adventurous gardener who likes to try at least one new thing each year. We love sweet potatoes and eat them often. I ended up with a small crop of sweet potatoes, but they tasted very good.

Believe it or not Aldi carries bags of small delicious local (from NC) sweet potatoes. Nice when you can’t get to the farmer’s market. They are so much tastier than the mammoth ones the grocery store carries.
