Scrounging for signs of spring

Can you espy the bluebird?

The landscape is still brown and gray and wintry, but given the warmer temperatures for the past few days, and because the birds are singing, spring is surely just around the corner. This time of year, if it’s not raining, I take a walk around the yard every day to see how things are coming along.

Young mustard. This volunteered beside the chicken house. A morsel that I threw to the chickens must have escaped somehow and taken root.

I don’t know what this is. The ground is thick with it in the flower bed where the cosmos grew last year. I suppose this could be cosmos, but I also suspect that it may be different type of wildflower, a perennial, that I planted last year but which won’t bloom until this year.

Is the lawn in the background of the bluebird picture what you were able to mow with your new toy? It looks pretty clean!!! Do you have a garage to keep those type of toys in or a shead?

The area behind the bluebird house is one of my roughest areas. I am thinking of getting someone to plow up that area. Unfortunately, a proper outbuilding for storage has not come to the top of my budget’s priority list, but it’s something I definitely need as soon as I can swing it.

What will you do with it once it is plowed? Plant on it?? I hear ya on the priority list. I won’t be building a garage right away either. I however do not have a yard to mow I am just cutting in where the cottage will sit and leaving the rest of the woods as they are. I will garden around the house but my solar window will not support the growth of grass. My driveway is like a tunnel it runs 300 feet back to where the house will be located and in the summer it’s like driving down a natural green tunnel. It’s pretty cool. The driveway was cut in over 15 years ago by the original owners and has grown it’s own character.

A tunnel through the woods is the coolest thing possible. I would love to have something like that…
