My deciduous magnolias are stunning this year. But tonight we’re expecting frost, and they can’t take much of that. All the other early blooms should be fine. But the deciduous magnolias hate frost.
I hope you can enjoy those blossoms a bit longer. We have one small magnolia known as a “star” magnolia – very pretty pinkish color but we need to protect it through the summer from the intense heat using stand umbrellas. If I knew how to add the picture here I would

Hi Henry: The frost last night caused a total loss, not only to my white magnolia but the pink one as well. I believe this is the fourth spring in a row that a late frost has hit the magnolias. It’s interesting that, where you are, it’s the heat that is the problem. I should mention that it’s only the deciduous magnolias that bloom early here. The Southern magnolia, magnolia grandiflora, blooms in high summer and loves the heat. I think the grandiflora grows well in California.
