Nothing brightens the yard in early spring like red clover. I hand-scattered 10 pounds of seed last fall. Today I found the first bloom, on the day lily bank. Soon there will be much more.

Caviar! Not to you and me, but to groundhogs. Clover is their favorite food, and the blooms are like candy.
At least that has been my experience watching our groundhogs every spring. Last year’s big chubby mamma is gone now. In her place: two cute siblings who gambol around like children playing grab-ass. Endless free entertainment.

Hi DCS: There was a groundhog family here 10 years ago when the soil here was still loose from grading, but now they seem to have moved on. They’d be welcome to the red clover, though…
